Robert Browning Productions and Lotus Music & Dance Present three concerts of World Music

3/26 Hamza Akram Qawwal & Brothers

Sufi Chants of Pakistan

Tickets HERE

Pakistan’s award-winning Hamza Akram Qawwal & Brothers, grandsons of the revered Munshi Raziuddin, will perform riveting interpretations of qawwali, the ecstatic improvisational Sufi vocal tradition made famous in the West by the late Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. With lively rhythmic handclapping and drumming, joyous melodies, inspirational poetry and powerful vocals (similar to gospel in its call-and-response manner), they will perform songs that range from 13th century mystical Persian poems to more recent Punjabi poems that speak of the intoxication of divine love.

3/31 Omar Sosa and Seckou Keita

Tickets Here

Cuban piano virtuoso Omar Sosa and Senegalese kora (21-string harp lute) master Seckou Keita, whose collaborations brilliantly embrace jazz, Latin and African influences, celebrate the release of their second album, SUBA. Written and recorded in 2020 during the global lockdown, SUBA is a hymn to hope, to a new dawn of compassion and change in a post-pandemic world, and a visceral reiteration of humanity’s prayer for peace and unity. The program weaves together themes of friendship and spiritual connection, travel and loss, hope and optimism, dancing and the sea, and a new sunrise ("Suba" means "sunrise" in Mandinka). The seven-time Grammy-nominated Sosa has explored African musical cultures and their connections with his Afro-Cuban roots throughout his long career; Keita has become one of the most influential and inspiring kora players of his generation. They are joined by the inimitable Venezuelan percussionist Gustavo Ovalles, who encompasses the polyrhythmic sound of the African diaspora.

 4/2 L. Shankar

Indian Masters

Tickets HERE

The internationally renowned virtuoso violinist/singer/composer L. Shankar has been acclaimed for his deeply soulful performances of Indian classical music. In addition to appearing as a major soloist, he has also accompanied many of South India’s leading vocalists, and, in the 1970s co-founded, with John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, and Vikku Vinayakram, the legendary Indo-jazz group Shakti.  In the 1980s, he introduced a 10-string double violin capable of covering the whole range of the orchestra’s string section from violin to double bass. To date, he has continued to expand the international audience for Indian music, often combining North Indian (Hindustani) and South Indian (Carnatic) styles.  He will be accompanied by Abhijit Banerjee, one of the top-ranking tabla (tuned hand drums) players of his generation, and Rohan Krishnamurthy (mrdangam – barrel drum, kanjira – small frame drum), a leading voice in South Indian classical and cross-genre music in the South Asian diaspora.

ALI AKBAR MORADI & PEJMAN HADADI
Sacred Trance Music of Kurdistan

This ecstatic and trance-inducing concert of Kurdish music from western Iran brings together two of Iran's most renowned musicians:  Ali Akbar Moradi, the extraordinary virtuoso of the tanbour, an ancient 2-stringed long-necked fretted lute traditionally used in religious ceremonies, and Pejman Hadadi, the innovative percussionist (tombak, daf) who has been a member of the Dastan Ensemble for over 20 years and collaborated with countless master musicians in Persian and world traditions. Their program features meditative improvisations based on the repertoire of the Yarsan people – followers of a mystical faith associated with Sufism, and the beauty and complexities of the art of this region. The program marks a rare NY appearance for Moradi and Hadadi.

DEBAPRIYA & SAMANWAYA with TANMOY BOSE
Music of North India: Vocal/Sitar Jugalbandi (duet)

This jugalbandi with virtuosos Debapriya Adhikary and Samanwaya Sarkar, two of India’s foremost young artists, is unusual in that is a duet with vocal and sitar (lute) instead of the more common duets with two instrumentalists or two vocalists.  Both artists trained with Padmabhusan Giriji Devi and have traveled worldwide with their brilliant renditions of Hindustani (North Indian) music. They are joined by accomplished tabla (drums) player Tanmoy Bose, whose many credentials include accompanying Pt. Ravi Shankar and Ud. Amjad Ali Khan.
