Drums Along The Hudson
A NATIVE AMERICAN FESTIVAL AND SHAD FEST
The Sixth Annual Drums Along the Hudson: A Native American Festival and Shad Fest will take place on Saturday May 3rd, 2008 in Northern Manhattan's Inwood Hill Park at 218th Street, 4 blocks West of Broadway, from 11am to 6pm, rain or shine. This event is open to the public and is sponsored in part by Lotus Music & Dance, JPMorgan Chase, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, Hudson River Foundation and WABC-TV.
A multi cultural festival, Drums Along the Hudson includes exhibits of world dance and drumming traditions as well as international foods and Native American arts and crafts. It also features the only open air Pow Wow in Manhattan, which is a celebratory gathering of Native people. This year’s pow wow will be led by Louis Mofsie and the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers with special guests from Bermuda--the St. David’s Island Indians and The Warwick Gombey Troupe. Other featured performers will include the Mohawk Singers and Dancers, Harambee Dance Company, Trinayan (Odissi dancers), and Carioca Capoeira, as well as other indigenous and international artists.
During the day between the hours of 1pm and 3pm we take time to honor organizations and or individuals for their contributions to either the environment or to humanity. The Environmental Honoree for 2008 is Jake Swamp, Founder of the Tree of Peace Society, which is dedicated to the principles of universal peace, individual responsibility and a deep personal relationship with the natural world. Xernona Clayton, the 2008 Humanitarian Honoree, is the Creator and Executive Producer of the Trumpet Awards, an annual award ceremony which acknowledges the accomplishments of men and women who have significantly contributed to enhancing the quality of life for all. Special guests will be Mohawk Elder Tom
Porter and Sandra Bookman, weekend anchor for WABC-TV 7, will host the event.
SHAD FEST will be celebrated with Shad Planking demonstrations and tastings. Visitors will
learn how to cook this delicious fish for themselves, and the Urban Park
Rangers and friends of the festival will present demonstrations and nature-themed
games for the kids.
